Cholera Outbreak in Angola: Situation Update

By Friends of Angola

Since early January 2025, Angola has been facing one of the most severe cholera outbreaks in recent decades. As of May 10, 2025, the country had recorded 19,384 cases and over 600 deaths linked to the disease, with the most vulnerable populations—those with limited access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation—being disproportionately affected.

Data from the Last 48 Hours

In the past 48 hours, Angola reported a significant increase in cholera cases, with 350 new infections and 11 deaths. The epicenter of the outbreak has shifted to Cuanza Norte province, which alone reported 67 cases in a single day.

Government Response

The Ministry of Health of Angola, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, has implemented several measures to contain the outbreak:

  • Oral cholera vaccination campaigns

  • Distribution of hygiene kits and water purification supplies

  • Deployment of rapid response teams

  • Community awareness campaigns on cholera prevention and treatment

Despite these efforts, the continued spread of the disease remains a concern—especially due to the rainy season and population movement between provinces and neighboring countries.

Recommendations

To stop the spread of cholera, it is essential to:

  • Ensure access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation

  • Strengthen epidemiological surveillance and rapid case treatment

  • Maintain vaccination campaigns and public health education

The WHO classifies the risk of cholera transmission in Angola and neighboring regions as very high, emphasizing the urgent need for sustained international support to control the outbreak.
