STATEMENT OF CONDEMNATION
By Friends of Angola
Luanda, June 2, 2025
Friends of Angola (FoA) vehemently condemns the violent attack carried out against a UNITA delegation on May 29, 2025, in the municipality of Ngalanga, Huambo Province, just meters away from the Municipal Command of the National Police. The assault, reportedly carried out by a group associated with the MPLA, resulted in at least seven injuries—including General Apollo Felino Pedro Yakuvela—and the disappearance of a member of the delegation.
According to multiple media outlets, the incident, which aimed to obstruct an institutional visit previously communicated to provincial and municipal authorities, constitutes a grave violation of the principles of the Democratic Rule of Law, freedom of political association, and pluralistic coexistence in Angola. The brutality of the attack—involving more than 150 assailants armed with stones, sticks, and machetes—and the initial inaction by public security forces are unacceptable and undermine the safety and dignity of citizens.
It is particularly alarming that the incident took place in front of the National Police Command without any adequate preventive action, raising serious concerns about the commitment of local authorities to impartiality, legality, and the protection of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
Friends of Angola expresses its solidarity with the injured, the families of the victims, and all those who continue to fight peacefully for democracy in Angola. We deeply regret that the municipality of Ngalanga—already plagued by extreme poverty and a lack of essential services—is now facing a growing climate of political intolerance.
We demand:
· The immediate identification and accountability of both the intellectual and material perpetrators of the attack;
· An independent and transparent investigation into the role of the National Police and local administrative authorities;
· Public assurances that such actions will not be repeated;
· Reinforced institutional commitment to tolerance, political pluralism, and the fundamental rights of all Angolans.
Angolan democracy must not be held hostage by intimidation and violence. Respect for difference, civil political debate, and equal treatment are essential conditions for building a just, free, and truly democratic Angola.
