Statement of Repudiation:
The non-governmental organization Friends of Angola (FoA) expresses its deep condemnation of the arbitrary detention of women in Luanda during a peaceful march against domestic violence on March 29, 2025. The repression of demonstrators exercising their constitutional right to free expression is unacceptable and violates fundamental principles of a democratic society.
FoA has been closely monitoring with concern the systematic violations of the rights to freedom of assembly and peaceful protest in Angola. On multiple occasions, the organization has denounced the repression of peaceful demonstrations and the arbitrary detention of activists and citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
Given these facts, Friends of Angola demands:
- A thorough and impartial investigation into the abuses committed by security forces, with proper accountability for those involved.
- Unrestricted respect for constitutional rights, including freedom of expression, assembly, and peaceful protest.
- Protection guarantees for women and all citizens fighting for their rights, ensuring they can engage in their activities without fear of violence or retaliation.
The fight against domestic violence and the defense of women’s rights are legitimate and urgent causes. Repressing peaceful demonstrations in support of these causes is an unacceptable setback that will not be tolerated by Angolan society. Friends of Angola will remain vigilant and active in defending human rights and fundamental freedoms in Angola.
Sincerely,
Florindo Chivucute
Executive Director
