Friends of Angola (FoA) solemnly commemorates the victims of the May 27, 1977 massacre in Angola — one of the darkest and most painful chapters in the country’s history.
By Florindo Chivucute
On this day, thousands of Angolans were arbitrarily detained, tortured, disappeared, and executed following political events that led to a brutal wave of repression carried out by the state. For decades, many families have continued to live without truth, justice, accountability, or proper acknowledgment of the suffering endured by their loved ones.
As an organization committed to democracy, human rights, transparency, and historical justice, Friends of Angola reaffirms that genuine national reconciliation cannot exist without truth, accountability, and the preservation of historical memory.
We honor the memory of all those who lost their lives and stand in solidarity with the survivors and families who continue to seek answers, recognition, and justice.
Friends of Angola believes that confronting painful historical realities is essential for building a democratic society founded on human dignity, respect for human rights, and the rule of law. Silence and impunity only deepen historical wounds and undermine efforts toward reconciliation and national unity.
We therefore call on the Angolan authorities to:
- Continue efforts toward full transparency regarding the events of May 27;
- Open historical archives and guarantee access to information;
- Support independent historical investigations;
- Ensure accountability where possible;
- And promote inclusive national dialogue centered on truth, justice, and reconciliation.
As Angola continues its democratic journey, remembering May 27 is not about reopening divisions — it is about ensuring that such atrocities never happen again.
Friends of Angola remains committed to supporting efforts that promote democratic accountability, civic participation, historical memory, and the protection of human rights in Angola.
